History of Diesel
Diesel is the first brand that aims solely to meet the needs of the youth of today. To be a Diesel wearer is a state of mind as well as an expression of style and fashion.
Diesel’s founder Renzo Russo started off from humble beginnings at a textile company called Moltex in 1975, Renzo Russo was a production manager at the company but he had big ideas and saw an opportunity. He formed a partnership with the Moltex company director Adriano Goldschmied and his partners in 1978 and by 1979 Russo had launched his new designer jeans based label Diesel. The name Diesel was chosen because it of its universal context that would make Diesel easy to market on a global level.
The 80’s saw Russo by out his partners and the Diesel brand add new areas to its portfolio with a new kids range launched which played on Diesel jeans strengths as well as launching its first women’s range this saw the company’s appeal increase massively.
During the 90’s with complete control of Diesel Russo embarked on recruitment bringing into the company some of the hottest young talent from design schools all over the world, and allowing their creative talents to flow, there job remit was to create clothes they would wear. Russo gave his new designer complete Carte Blanche this is what would give Diesel the impetus in the 90’s, along with advertising campaigns that would rival that of Benetton and Calvin Kline.
Later on in the 90’s with 55DSL brand was launched aimed at the adventure sports lovers. Diesel also launched its first flag ship store in 1996 in New York this would prove to be a turning point for Diesel, with many more Diesel branded stores to follow.
