History of Guess
Guess have changed the world of fashion since they first were sold in Bloomingdales in 1981 to the present day. Guess’s impact has been felt ever since Georges Marciano landed in New York, ushering in the period of the super model by finding models like Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell.
The Guess brand was founded when Georges Marciano opened a boutique in Los Angeles with his brother Maurice in 1981. The brothers had left France owing large sums to the French government in tax after formally owning a chain of retail stores in France. The boutique would sell stone washed jeans with a triangular emblem stitched into the pocket which would be the start of the Guess brand. However these jeans did not fly off the shelves until Georges flew to New York and persuaded Bloomingdales to test run a small amount of Guess jeans. This test run of jeans would only last on the shelves for 3 hours and so the demand for Guess began.
However the big expansion of the brand began when another of the brothers joined from France, Paul Marciano would change the face of the fashion world with his advertising campaigns that would shock and create even more hype for the Guess brands. These adverts were aimed at the youth of the time, using sex to sell Guess jeans. These adverts would not only contain the Guess products but would be the stepping stone for models such as Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell.
Licensing problems blighted Guess’s rise during the 80’s but this did not stop the brothers expanding Guess into new areas, with new clothing lines moving away from their traditional denim range, they also re-launched the Guess men’s clothing range and created a children’s clothing range as well as launching Guess sunglasses. When Guess finally won their court room battles by the 90’s they had turned themselves into one of the fashion worlds must have brands.
The 90’s also saw the creation of the Guess watch brand which would see Guess bring there own inimitable style to the world of watch making. Guess watches would continue to expand through the 90’s being sold through the whole of America and later through the rest of the world.
Guess would stagnate for a period in the 00’s until in 2004 Guess pulled off what was to become a stroke of genius making the next Guess girl Paris Hilton and launching a watch range and clothes that would see the Guess brand once more in the lime light.
