A brief History of the Tissot watch brand
Tissot is a name that has been associated with watch making excellence for more than 150 years. The Tissot brand was founded by father and son watch-makers Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile Tissot in the region of Le locle during 1853. During the mid to late 19th century Le locle was a hub of watch making activity. Some of the world?s leading watch-makers migrated to the Le Locle region to become part of the watch making revolution that was taking place there. Many other watch companies like Tissot can trace their heritage back to this Swiss region, and to similar humble beginnings. However, from these humble beginnings the Tissot family soon evolved into a company, producing watches for the likes of Tzar Nicholas II and for Queen Elisabeth I of Belgium.
The Tissot name had become very prestigious by the turn of the century with many Royals and celebrities of the time traveling to the Le Locle region to have their watches made by Tissot. This courtship of celebrities continued into the 1940's with the film and Broadway star Carmen Miranda owning a Tissot ladies watch
Tissot though, were not just a fashion watch for the rich and famous, they were now a key player in the advancement of wristwatch technology. Tissot launched the world's first antimagnetic automatic watch in 1933 thus proving to be a huge step in the direction towards the watches that we all know and love today. The antimagnetic automatic watch was a huge success for Tissot.
Tissot had found a niche in the market as innovators. They began creating watches that would push the boundaries of watch making technology and further advancements were soon to follow the antimagnetic Tissot automatic watch, Tissot launched the Navigator watch during the 1950's. This particular watch once more showed that the Tissot company were innovators in the field of men's watches. They created a watch that was perfect for the new market that was being created by aeronautical advancements. The Navigator watch was a men's Tissot watch as men were seen as the key buyers of watches at this time.
Tissot continued to advance their brand name and notoriety in the world watch market by continuing to create men's and ladies Tissot watches for the masses. The 1970's were an important decade for Tissot. Tissot launched their first plastic watch at the 1971 Basle watch fair. The 70's also saw Tissot expand their advertising into the world of sports gaining a deal to sponsor the F1 Lotus team. This sponsorship would link Tissot sports watches with sports right up to date.
The 1980's saw Tissot continuing to experiment with materials that their watches were made from which came in the form of a collection of ladies watches. The new ranges of watches were aimed specifically at the growing women's watch market. The new collection started with a rock watch and soon expanded into a collection which used material like granite and wood to create the cases of this range of watches. Along with experimenting with different materials Tissot also expanded their collection in to the newly fast growing LCD watch market. This expansion was the first step into what would become the most successful Tissot watch range ever. This was the Tissot T-Touch range. However, this was not to come for another 2 decades. The 1980's also saw the expansion of Tissot watch families with new ranges appearing like the Tissot PR50 and the Tissot Desire range.
Tissot continued their close relationship with sports throughout the 80's and 90's. They secured some of the most lucrative advertising deals with up and coming sports stars like Michael Owen who bust on the to the premiership and world sports scene with Liverpool and England. Michael Owen is still part of team and wears watches like the Tissot Quadratto. Tissot have also tapped into the lucrative advertising scheme of timekeeping at some of the biggest world sports events like the cycling world championships and Moto GP. Tissot have added people like Nicky Hayden from the world of Moto GP to their sports star sponsorship schemes creating the much sought after T-Race limited edition range as part of their sponsorship deal with Nicky Hayden and Moto GP.
The 00's though have brought the most exciting developments within the Tissot watch brand with them once more being at the front of innovation in the watch market by creating the T-Touch watch . Since the launch of the Tissot T-Touch watch the way in which you use your watch has completely changed. There is more and more information now available from your watch. Tissot though have not rested on their laurels and have expanded the T-Touch watch range as new technology become available. 2008 saw the launch of the T-Touch Expert the second generation of T-Touch watches. The
T-Touch Expert added new functions like 100 meter water resistance and a back light now added to the T-Touch Expert range. 2009 saw further additions to the T-Touch Expert range with the addition of the Sea Touch and the T-Touch Expert Pilot.
The Tissot watch families have grown and evolved with time creating the watches that we now see today which are so popular. With so many Tissot watches available to today, you are now bound to find the right Tissot watch for you.
